55 YEARS OF POOL
Donny Lutz first picked up a pool cue to play a game of "bumper pool" with his Dad in an old Wisconsin tavern in 1955. Four months later he was banned from playing in that tavern as his Dad was winning too many drinks and dollar bills betting on the skinny 12-year-old boy.
Although bowling became the youngster's first love in sports, he continued to play pool occasionally, managed a small billiard center briefly in 1965, and organized one of the first successful pool leagues in the Midwest in '66. He won his first pool tournament, the La Crosse Singles title, in 1970, and after retiring from bowling in '73, began to play pool more seriously.
He was captain/coach of the Don's Seldom Inn team that took 5th place at the US Open team event in Milwaukee in 1980, and 4th place the following year. In '81 he won a qualifier for the BCA National 8-Ball Singles tournament in Las Vegas, where he lost 5-2 to Nick Varner. Three years later he captured the Midwest Bar Table 9-ball title in Minneapolis, and followed that by captain/coaching the Red Sails Resort team to the Minnesota State Team title in '85. During the '86-'87 season, he won 30 team and singles events, including a second Minnesota team title and League MVP while playing for the defending Valley International Team champion Red Sails.
Donny then moved to Bethesda, Maryland for a new job and quit playing for three years, but began again in 1991. His Breakers team out of Rockville took 3rd in the BCA Nationals, while Donny finished 5th out of 700+ players in the Open Singles. After becoming certified as a BCA Instructor, he spent a year as House Pro & League/Tournament Director at Pockets Billiard Center in Gaithersburg in '93, and then a year in the same position at Champion Billiards in Laurel, MD. He was known by the nickname "Ponytail" in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.
When he had his cue case and three cues stolen in '95, Donny retired from competition and moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he plays occasionally, and still loves teaching pocket billiards to those serious about the game of pool.
